''In February of last year Trudy Mead from Cancer Focus attended a health and wellbeing event I had organised for Lisburn Jobcentre. At this time I had been a smoker, on and off ( more on than off) for approximately 27 years.  At the event after speaking with Trudy, she took a carbon monoxide test and explained the benefits of not smoking.

Most smokers know most of these already but choose to avoid the topic. This was how I usually approached quitting smoking. We discussed the support available from Cancer Focus and as I was getting married later that year I felt now was the time to try quitting so I took to the plunge to sign up to the programme. I was hesitant at first as I had quit before with the longest time being a year but I listened to Trudy's advice.

The support I received was fantastic. We discussed and agreed that nicotine patches with an inhaler would be my best option after going over other alternative methods like mints and gums.

We would arrange fortnightly meetings either in person but mostly on MS Teams were Trudy would contact me and support my progress as well as sending the patches by recorded delivery to my home address or work if she was unable to meet in person. Trudy supported me from March to June of last year gradually decreasing my nicotine patch levels and after the first month the inhaler was no longer needed. I received handy quitting cards to remind me why I was quitting which fit nicely in the wallet for reference.

The health benefits were and still are fantastic. I have more energy and was able to return to running competing in a 10k event last year and again this year. My sleep has also improved. I no longer smell of smoke which was always a concern of mine.

The money I saved from not smoking was also amazing. The brand I smoke now costs £19.75 a pack and I was on a 20 a day habit . That’s £138.25 weekly , £599 monthly or £7189.00 yearly. (This really helped with my wedding costs) When you write those numbers down its bizarre to think how I could afford to do this in the past.

Its been 14 months since I completed the quit smoking programme and I am still smoke free. I am extremely grateful to Trudy and the Cancer Focus team for helping me to quit smoking.''

Having been a smoker for over 40 years I thought I was one of those people who would never give up.  Looking back, I thought when smoking I was availing of freedom of choice, now that I’m free of it I see that I was a slave to the cigarettes.  Cancer Focus Northern Ireland made the difference for me with weekly counselling sessions and tremendous support, even getting my stop smoking medication sorted out with my GP. The quality of many aspects of my life has been wonderfully improved by getting free of cigarettes. I can never thank Cancer Focus Northern Ireland and my counsellor enough.
