Civil Servant takes on Seven Peaks Challenge for Cancer Fund for Children

David Cross, a Civil Servant Tech Support Officer is taking on the Seven Peaks Challenge on the 10th September.

"Hello, my name is David Cross and I’ve worked in the Child Maintenance Service for nearly 9 years. I’ve worked in several roles but I’m currently a Tech Support Officer.

On 10th September I will be trekking the 7 peaks of the Mourne Mountains in Newcastle with a number of friends. This journey will take us over 800m above sea level and will take around 12 – 14 hours to complete. With just under 3 weeks to go I have already been doing some training for the day, hiking 17km and scaling 3 peaks in 7 hours on 14th August then hiking 14km and scaling 4 peaks on 20th August. Both times were very different experiences due to the weather but both equally exhilarating.

It is going to take all of my strength and determination to complete this challenge, but it is for a wonderful cause and one very close to me and my family. Our friends John & Nicole were blessed with a little baby boy in May 2017 called Danny. Danny is the youngest of 3 brothers and a real character. Unfortunately, Danny was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, a rare form of cancer in March 2019 at just 22 months old. Danny has been through so much already at such a young age with his chemotherapy treatments and multiple surgery’s. Despite all this Danny has a real zest for life like you wouldn’t believe, every time I see him, he has a big smile on his face just waiting to keep me going about Man Utd. Danny had surgery to remove a lesion removed from his skull, within days he was smiling and riding on his favourite jeep, looking for someone to push him.

Danny is just one story for thousands of kids that cancer affects, and if we can draw on just a small piece of his and the other kids’ courage we can trek and climb these mountains on 10th September for this great cause.

We hope to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Fund for Children. We have already raised over £5,000 which is an amazing amount of money which will benefit so many families. I know first-hand with Danny, that every little helps and the families that it would help are so grateful and thankful."
