Dementia Awareness Talk at NIEA Lisburn

As part of Women’s International Health Day Pamela Frazer from Alzheimer’s Society came to NIEA Lisburn on Tuesday 5th March to give a presentation on Dementia Awareness.

At the awareness session Pamela talked to the staff about the signs and symptoms of Dementia and showed us how Dementia affects behaviour, the senses and communication, we also learned about some small changes that can help make a Dementia friendly community.

We were told that there are several different types of Dementia, the most common ones are Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer’s. However the others we were told about are Lewy Body, Frontotemporal, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, Wernicke-Korsakoff’s. I personally found this very interesting as I didn’t know about these less known ones.

Dementia is more common in the older generation, however younger people can still get this terrible disease.

However to help improve our chances of not getting Dementia you are advised to follow a healthy lifestyle by keeping active but also keep your brain active by doing something that stimulates the brain e.g. puzzles on a regular basis.
